Designing Worlds DW299 - One Billion Rising in Second Life 2016

Since February 2013, residents of the virtual world of Second Life have organized a 24-hour event in the virtual world as part of One Billion Rising, a global campaign to combat violence against women and girls.

One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. In 2016, the theme of Revolution, begun with the 2015 event, continued with a call to focus on marginalised women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls; to call on people to rise for others, and not just for themselves.

This year's Second Life event took place on Sunday February 14, 2016 along with thousands of physical-world events that same day. In SL, an extensive group of artists, musicians and entertainers came together to present 24 hours of music, dance performances, art, poetry slams and informational exhibits.

The event featured a four-region dance stage supporting up to 200 avatars, surrounded by an area of art installations, an arena for poetry and dramatic productions, and informational exhibits. A variety of performers played over the 24-hour period and poetry and dramatic events were held at different times, enabling people all over the world to attend this virtual event no matter their timezone.

This episode of Designing Worlds – the weekly show about design and designers in virtual worlds – includes an overview of the event, interviews with some of the participants, and excerpts from some of the performances.

Trigger warning: The play reading "Lost Pleiads" included in this programme (25:24-57:30) contains verbal first-person descriptions of violence to women that may be upsetting to some viewers. The art exhibit overview (58:53-1:07:39) also includes images that some may find unsettling.
